Mixed Signal Asic Design Methodology for Space Applications

چکیده
ASIC products can provide system solutions that would not otherwise be possible with commercial offthe-shelf semiconductor devices. Reduction in system cost, volume and weight as well as increase in system performances are only few of the most obvious advantages. Sometimes, though, deciding to apply an ASIC design solution to an analogue or mixed-signal circuit can imply difficult decisions and trade-offs either in terms of technology and quality level offered on the market, or in terms of investments required to set-up a mixed-mode design environment and train enough resources. This paper presents the results of studies performed at LABEN ( a Finmeccanica Company), with the support of the Integrated Microcircuits Group of the University of Pavia acting as expert in analogue IC design, inherent to the introduction of a design methodology for the development of mixed signal (analogue and digital) ASICs for space applications aiming to broaden the digital ASIC standard design flow to the mixed-signal field. The envisaged methodologies have been experienced in the development of two mixed-signal devices; in particular one development (e.g. ABACUS ) is running in the frame of an ESPRIT project partially funded by EC.

Mixed-signal Design Methodology Using a Priori Single Event Transient Rate Estimates
Mixed-signal integrated circuits used in space applications are exposed to solar particles and galactic cosmic rays (GCR). For earth orbit environments, the energy and composition of the particle radiation depends primarily upon the orbital inclination and the orbit altitude. However, due to the solar cycle and its interaction with the GCR, there is also a time dependence to the intensity and e...

The paper presents an ASIC to be used in one of the instruments of Rosetta Lander – a spacecraft that will investigate properties of comet 46 P/Wirtanen nucleus. The Rosettabis chip integrates a number of analog and digital modules of densitometer and thermal conductivity measurement subsystems. In addition to chip architecture and design methodology some problems typical for space application ...
متن کاملModular approach for an ASIC integration of electrical drive controls
VLSI circuits design allows today to consider new modes of implementation for electrical controls. However, design techniques require an adaptation effort that few designers, too accustomed to the software approach, provide. The authors of this article propose to develop a methodology to guide the electrical designers towards optimal performances of control algorithms implementation. Thus, they...
متن کاملAdding a Mixed-Signal PLL to a Prime Digital ASIC
Many ASIC companies make it easy to add a PLL, offering the core as a drop-in cell on a standard-cell design or as a cell option in a gate array. However, that seemingly simple addition of a PLL cell to an all-digital ASIC can cause several problems if the ASIC designer isn’t careful. Although much of what is inside a PLL circuit is high-speed digital circuitry, the guts of the PLL include anal...
متن کاملThe IBM ASIC/SoC
This paper describes the methodology employed by the IBM Microelectronics Division for the design of its Blue Logic applicationspecific integrated circuits (ASICs) and system-on-a-chip (SoC) designs. This methodology is used by both IBM ASIC and SoC designers, as well as OEM customers. A key focus of the IBM ASIC/SoC methodology, outlined in the first section of this paper, is the first-time-ri...
